WALT: Analyze surface features and the language used.  Look beyond the text - Inferencing

1. UNFURL - Find out the meaning of this word and then write a sentence of your own to show the meaning. What unfurl means is unfolding the sail.

2. How do you tell which way the wind is coming from? How you can tell another way to find out which way the wind is blowing is by looking at the tree branches.

3. Can you think of a another way of finding out? Ask a classmate to test out your theory.

4. What makes the Optimist so sturdy, safe and unsinkable? Explain your answer: How it is not sinkable is because it has something underneath it called the: Centerboard.

5. Make as many smaller words as you can from the words ‘Optimist Sailing Dinghies’:

Meaning
rigging
the system of ropes or chains employed to support a ship's masts ( standing rigging ) and to control or set the yards and sails ( running rigging ).
sail
a piece of material extended on a mast to catch the wind and propel a boat or ship or other vessel.
rudder
a flat piece hinged vertically near the stern of a boat or ship for steering.
  • a vertical aerofoil pivoted from the tailplane of an aircraft, for controlling movement about the vertical axis.

a flat piece hinged vertically near the stern of a boat or ship for steering.
